Continuing Your Opportunity Research

Sept 26, 2019

The opportunity I will be discussing is banning flavored vapes. This is a major problem affecting teens who have never been addicted to nicotine and are consuming it now.

Who:
During my interview I talked to people who smoke cigarettes, non-vape smokes who work at gas station and a parent of a teen who smokes vapes. From the interview I realized from the cigarette smoker flavored vapes are a great alternative and it does help to stop smoking cigarettes. People who are selling vapes said they aren’t going to be affected saying they knew it was going to be a phase. The parent who said her high schooler smokes vapes is for the stop of flavored vapes saying they have taken over school and “it’s the cool thing to do”.
What:
Making flavored vapes illegal will stop the huge raise in teen smoking flavored vapes. Banning vapes will for sure decrease consumption.
Why:
There need is different because they are trying to help the younger generation and by banning flavored vapes it will be a right step for America. Expect for a
cigarette’s smoker believe that flavored vapes serve as an alternative however they could be just as bad since we don’t know the long term affects.

Inside the boundary
Outside the boundary
Who is in: Vapers, vape shops
Who is Not: cigarette smoker
What the Need Is: that vapers don’t know the long term affects, so it should be banned
What the Need Is Not:
Not banning vapes
Why the Need Exists: the need exist because consumption is increasing, and people are getting sick.
Alternative Explanations:
To not ban them for an alternative to smoking cigarettes.

Solving the problem

Sept 20, 2019

Hypothesis:
That all forms of vapes should be banned due to respiratory illnesses and we don’t know the long-term effects.

Solution:
Banning all vapes is great for people who don’t smoke however there is a vast majority that are addicted to vaping so making a support group and making a new line of gum that helps quitters and isn’t as expensive Nicorette. Another solution is heavily enforcing no black markets and monitoring activity of civilians to ensure they obeying by the laws.

You Have An Opportunity, Now What?

Sept 20, 2019

My hypothesis:
That all forms of vapes should be banned due to respiratory illnesses and we don’t know the long-term effects.
Who: Vapes
What : vapes should be banned
Why: they are causing sicknesses and don’t know long term affect

Testing the who:This is a very controversial topic right due to recent cases of young adults forming a respiratory illness I believe who has the need are people who don’t vape and have friends and family around them who do and are encouraging them to stop.
Testing the what: “Is banning vapes going to stop vape smokers?” “What are smokers going to resort to?” “Shouldn’t we be banning cigarettes too?”
Testing the why: Are they just smoking nicotine or some other drug?

After I interviewed the five people most people agreed on banning all vapes. The people who opposed banning vapes where a vape smoker and a vape shop worker. They believe that if they ban all vapes that it’s not going to stop the use of them, and people will be using them illegally and then the FDA can’t regulate them. The other three all consistently agreed that vaping is the new thing for young teens and America is taking a good direction in stopping it.

The interviews went in the direction I excepted knowing that I was problem going to get two opposing sides saying that the black market it going to increase. Making something illegal in America like during the prohibition people are going to find ways around it, and if we are selling it we can approve of the ingredients. After my interview I still believe that vapes should be banned however there could still have vapes that are helping people stop smoking cigarettes

Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Sept 19,2019
Regulatory trend:
1.    I found an article from the Filtermag that stated by 2020 the United States is banning all forms of e-cigarettes. I believe this opportunity exist more than ever right now because vaping is the new fad and now there were 215 cases of people having surgery and forming respiratory illnesses due to vaping. No one knows the long-term effect and the short terms effects aren’t looking good.  The people who are going to be the most affected are smokers who are going to have to go absence or resort to smoking cigarettes, another is the smoke shops since a lot of their sales are from vapes. Also, suppliers like the Juul are going to be impacted because they will be out of business. I personally believe in banning all e-cigs because a lot of my friends are smoking juuls and other vapes and it’s a very bad especially when they never smoked before. College students are surrounded by vape shops and hopefully soon the madness will stop.
2.    I found another article also taking about vaping but not with nicotine it has THC and there are three people who has died from it, according to USAToday. This exist because pothead think that weed isn’t harmful however from vapes containing THC people have died and it’s not soon until more people are to get sick or even die. The people who are going to be affected are THC distrusters illegal and legal. Also, smokers are going to be affected because they are smoking what can potentially be deadly. I believe this opportunity exist because I have a friend who using a medical card to buy THC pens to help her “anxiety” and I believe there are more natural methods to cure anxiety than smoking a pen.
Economic trends:
1.    In an article from USA Today stated Beto O'Rourke who is running for president is pushing for buyback of assault weapons i.e. AR 15, AK 47. This opportunity is existing right now because Americans are scared from the increase mass shooting in schools and other public places Americans are looking for a change to keep the country safe. The people who are affected would be owners of assault guns, gun shops and an increase in sales on the black market. Personally, guns to me are form of safety for some in a house hold, however there is no need to have that powerful of a weapon. I think eliminating assault weapons will make America feel a little safer and give the families affected by mass shooting a sense of hope that America is changing.

2.    An article found from Wall Street journal stated that housing market has increased, and the month of August was the strongest month in sales in nearly a year and a half. This opportunity is existing because the house market has been in a slump. The people affected are people who are selling their homes and people who are buying homes and the relators who are making a commission are the sales. This is relative to me because our house has been on the market for about 7 months and hopefully with the market turning around our house will sell.

Identifying Local Opportunities

Sept 13, 2019
1.  Jail Officer Charged in Domestic Incident
This article was about a Christopher, jail detention officer, was arrested for allegedly domestic violating his girlfriend who is also a detention officer. The problem presented in the story is they aren’t sure if it was for sure Chris that was abusing his girlfriend. The problem lies with court to see if there is enough evidence to charge Christopher with aggregated assault.
2.   Gainesville man charged in June church burglary
This article is about finding the man associated for breaking and entering into a local church and damaging it. The problem presented in the newspaper is trying to figure out whose blood was found to connect it to the burglary. Kyle Bundell a 27 was the problem because his blood matched the blood and making him guilty of breaking into the church. The problem lies within the detective department because they needed to find who was associated with the crime.
3.   Sinkhole, fire station contractor default cost to Newberry
This article was from last year and was involving the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. From the storm Gainesville had a lot of rainfall and created opened up two sinkholes costing the city around 43,000$. The problem in the story is that the cost was unexpected and they had to find a way to pay for the damages. The problem lies with the city because they have to find ways to fund the reconstruction.
4.   Idea brewing: Prairie View as ‘swing school’
This article is about making vacant elementary school Prairie View which hasn’t been in use since 2008 into a swing school for Idylwild. Idylwild is undergoing construction and the board of the school are discussing temporary classes at Prairie View until the school is finished with construction. The problem in the article is the commute to the temporary school saying that they can use the bus system for free. A proposed agreement to that is that parents aren’t going to feel comfortable with their under age kids riding the public bus system unaccompanied.  The problem lies with Idylwild elementary board to get this figured out so they can start construction.

5.  Gainesville friends plan boat trip to help Bahamas
This article is Hurricane Dorian and trying to recover the Bahamas. Charlene Rigby lived in Bahamas and she was there when the powerful Hurricane Floyd hit, and she knows how bad it was and is gathering up supplies to take to the Bahamas. The problem in this article is that she is only one person and she’s encouraging more people to help because Bahamas is in a desperate state. The problem lies within Americans since we are fortune enough to still have our homes, so Americans need to try and find a way to help.

Forming my Opportunity Belief

Sept 13,

Have you ever been on a road trip or an unfamiliar road using your maps on your smart phone and you are getting hungry or realize you need gas? Since you don’t know where you’re going you have to look up on your maps the “closest gas station “or “restaurant near me” when you do this map, the maps  only focus on the one function you asked it to, gas near you . The opportunity exists when you are sent in the completely wrong direction because the gas stations wasn’t in route of where you were already headed.
The unmet customer need is making maps more efficient to show gas or any other service in route of where you were going. Everyone who using maps ultimately has this need. I feel like this is need is new because of more people using maps and since technology is changing. Customers are now needing the in-route locater because it allows a more efficient trip.

#1 Taylor Schiling, a freshman at Santa Fe College who just moved here from California.

1.    Do you tend to use maps on long trips or even in everyday use?

“Yes, that is what I rely on especially since I am new to Gainesville, I have no clue where I’m going”

2.   Explain a recent time you used your maps.

“Recently my family and I drove from California to Florida and had to stop multiple times and the whole time we used our maps on our phones”

3.   How do you go about locating food or gas etc.? Did you find it difficult to locate food in route of the destination?

“We would look up food near us or look for signs on the highway. It wasn’t difficult to find food, but it was to find a particular food. When we would look up Taco Bell for instant it would pull up all Taco Bell and since we didn’t know where we were going it was hard to pick which one to go to.”

4.   Do you think having a feature on your maps like an in-route locater would be useful?
“Yes! I love that idea! I think it would be very useful because you would haven’t to drive in the opposite direction”

#2 Casey Higgins, a student at FSU, who traveled the West Coast by herself this past summer
1.    Do you tend to use maps on long trips or even in everyday use?

“Yes, that is the only way”

2.   Explain a recent time you used your maps.

“This summer I used my maps heavily when I traveled to the West Coast by myself and stopped in various states along the way. I had no clue where I was going and one of my mom’s rules was to keep my phone charged so I wouldn’t be stranded in the middle of nowhere.”

3.   How do you go about locating food or gas etc.? Did you find it difficult to locate food in route of the destination?

“I would also look at signs for food, and I have a gas card for mobile so I would look up mobile near me to find them. I found it difficult at first because one mobile would pop up and would be the opposite direction and I didn’t realize until I got gas and put back into my maps my destination and saw I added 30 more minutes to my trip, luckily I realized this early on so it wasn’t too difficult after that because I would see the route I was heading in before I looked for anything on maps.”

4.   Do you think having a feature on your maps like an in-route locater would be useful?
“Yes! Defiantly! I thought about this after my mobile experience and thought why this hasn’t been created.”

#3 Laura Black, director of operation at Express Scripts

1.    Do you tend to use maps on long trips or even in everyday use?

“Always I am always in different cities and maps makes it very easy”

2.   Explain a recent time you used your maps.

“Recently l landed in Indiana for business and once I got in my rental car I located where my meeting was going to be held”

3.   How do you go about locating food or gas etc.? Did you find it difficult to locate food in route of the destination?

“On the way to the office I wanted to grab Starbucks, so I used my maps to find a Starbucks around me. Luckily when I looked up the Starbucks it was .01 mile away from where I currently was at, so it was difficult to stay in route

4.   Do you think having a feature on your maps like an in-route locater would be useful?

“Most defiantly I for sure have thought about this before and thought it was ease people because it would take the stress of out being late because you went the wrong way”

Reflections:
I was surprised that all of the interviewees loved the idea and two of them have thought about this before. I realize that I interviewed people who have had recent experiences with traveling because I thought they would be able to relate to this idea the most. Next, I could interview people on more daily uses of maps when they aren’t in a new city and see if there is a need for in route.

Summary

The opportunity exists when people are using maps for traveling and in an unfamiliar place and need to locate another attraction in direction of their destination. This problem seems needed for customers who are traveling for long distant or in a new city. Based on customer feedback I feel that this opportunity is very adaptable because people are wasting time and getting lost because maps only can do one function.

My Entrepenurship Story

Sept 11, 2019
Recently I have been exposed to entrepreneurship first hand and it has been very inspiring to see the motivation and hard work that goes in it. My parents about six months ago decided that they wanted to open up their own business so eventually my mom could leave the corporate world. They talk to a lot of different businesses and decided to open up two Supercuts and turn them into franchises. During this journey I was able to help them first hand clean up the salons, implement new policy and trying to make it an improved salon. This past weekend my mom and I went to a Supercuts convention in Minnesota and was able to learn more about behind the scenes of businesses and get inspired by other entrepreneurs. John Paul was a guest speaker and he was so inspiring hearing him selling his huge company Patron and living in his car to startup a hair line called Paul Michelle and becoming successful from it.
I decided to take this class because I feel like in studying business you have to get inspired. Entrepreneurship is inspiring and motivating to be creative and never be scared to do what you want to do. I excited to take out of this class what are smart business moves and knowing the right time to succeed in opening a business.
